Is Jacó Worth Visiting? Here's What I Thought
When I arrived in Jacó, I wasn't looking for adventure - I was looking for a break.
Getting there from La Fortuna took most of the day, and after weeks of hiking, wildlife spotting, and constantly moving around Costa Rica, I was ready to slow down for a couple of days before continuing to Manuel Antonio.
I spent two nights in Jacó, but I didn't fill my itinerary with tours or activities. Instead, I embraced the beach-town atmosphere, watched the sunset, sampled a few local beers, and gave myself permission to simply relax.
So, is Jacó worth visiting? I think the answer depends on what you're looking for.

Why Do So Many Travellers Visit Jacó?
Located on Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast, Jacó is one of the country's most accessible beach towns. It's only a couple of hours from San José, making it a popular weekend getaway for locals and an easy first or last stop for international travellers.
Unlike destinations such as La Fortuna or Monteverde, Jacó isn't known for volcanoes, waterfalls, or dense rainforest. Instead, it's famous for its long stretch of sandy beach, consistent surf, lively restaurants and bars, and laid-back atmosphere. Whether you're learning to surf, enjoying the nightlife, or simply relaxing by the ocean, Jacó offers a completely different side of Costa Rica.
For backpackers, it's also a convenient stop between destinations. Many travellers pass through on their way to or from Manuel Antonio, and that's exactly how Jacó fit into my itinerary. After the long journey from La Fortuna, it was the perfect place to slow down, recharge, and enjoy a couple of easy days before continuing my adventure down the Pacific coast.

My Experience in Jacó
After the long journey from La Fortuna, I wasn't interested in rushing off to another tour or trying to squeeze as many activities as possible into my itinerary. Instead, I decided to do something that often gets overlooked while travelling - I slowed down.
I picked up a can of rum and Coke, found a spot on Jacó Beach, and spent the afternoon listening to the waves roll in. There wasn't much of a plan, and that was exactly what I needed. Sometimes the best travel days aren't filled with sightseeing - they're simply about enjoying where you are.
That evening, I wandered through town and came across a local craft beer bar. Trying local food and drinks is something I always enjoy when I travel, so sampling a few Costa Rican craft beers was a great way to spend the evening while soaking up Jacó's relaxed beach-town atmosphere.
The following day was just as laid-back. I spent part of the afternoon lounging by the pool before heading back to the beach to watch another beautiful Pacific sunset. The next morning, feeling rested and recharged, I packed my backpack and continued south to Manuel Antonio, ready for the next part of my Costa Rica adventure.

What I Liked About Jacó
While Jacó wasn't my favourite destination in Costa Rica, I really appreciated it for what it was. Not every stop on a trip needs to be packed with activities or famous attractions. Sometimes, you simply need a place to slow down and recharge before moving on.
I enjoyed how easy everything was. The beach was just a short walk away, there were plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from, and it was simple to spend the day however I felt. Whether that meant relaxing by the pool, walking along the shoreline, or stopping for a local craft beer, there was no pressure to stick to a schedule.
The sunsets were another highlight. There's something special about ending the day with your feet in the sand as the sky turns shades of orange and pink over the Pacific Ocean. It was the perfect way to unwind after a busy few weeks of travelling.
For me, Jacó wasn't about checking attractions off a list - it was about slowing down, embracing the beach lifestyle, and recharging before continuing on to Manuel Antonio.

Things to Know Before You Visit Jacó
If you're expecting the same type of experience as La Fortuna, Monteverde, or Manuel Antonio, Jacó might surprise you. It isn't known for incredible wildlife, volcanoes, or waterfalls. Instead, it's a destination where the beach, surfing, restaurants, and nightlife take centre stage.
Jacó is a great place if you want to learn to surf, enjoy a lively evening out, or simply spend a few days relaxing by the ocean. It's also one of the easiest beach towns to reach from San José, making it a convenient stop at the beginning or end of a Costa Rica itinerary.
If you're like me and enjoy a slower pace every now and then, Jacó can be the perfect place to recharge. On the other hand, if you're travelling to Costa Rica specifically for wildlife encounters and outdoor adventures, you may find yourself ready to move on after a day or two.
For me, two nights felt like the perfect amount of time. It gave me the opportunity to unwind, enjoy the beach, and break up the journey before continuing on to Manuel Antonio.

Final Thoughts
Looking back, I'm glad I included Jacó in my Costa Rica itinerary. It wasn't the most adventurous stop of my trip, and it wasn't meant to be. Instead, it gave me exactly what I needed - a chance to slow down, recharge, and enjoy a couple of peaceful days by the Pacific Ocean.
If you're looking for waterfalls, volcanoes, or incredible wildlife, you'll probably find places like La Fortuna, Monteverde, or Manuel Antonio more rewarding. But if you want to relax on the beach, enjoy a beautiful sunset, try a local craft beer, or simply take a break from constantly moving, Jacó is well worth considering.
Sometimes the best travel memories aren't the ones filled with activities. Sometimes they're the quiet moments like sitting on the beach with a drink in hand, listening to the waves, and appreciating exactly where you are. That's what Jacó was for me, and I wouldn't change a thing.
Jaco may not have been the busiest stop on my Costa Rica adventure, but it was exactly the reset I needed.
