Top 10 Unique Things to Do in Bangkok, Thailand
Bangkok is a bustling city of golden temples, chaotic markets, and endless street food. My time here was split — the first visit was during my teacher training, where I got my cultural experience through the program, and the second was after Cambodia when I spent most of my time sick in bed. I still saw a few highlights and kept my visits low-budget.
1. Khao San Road 🌟 Did This
Bangkok’s famous backpacker street — loud, colourful, and full of food stalls, bars, and massage shops. I even got a massage here during one visit.
JD’s Tip: Great place to get cheap food or a quick massage, but expect it to be crowded and touristy.
2. Grand Palace 🌟 Did This
Bangkok’s most famous landmark, home to the Emerald Buddha and stunning architecture. I only saw it from the outside, but even that was impressive.
JD’s Tip: If you go inside, dress modestly — covered shoulders and knees are required.
3. Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) 🌟 Did This
I only saw the temple from the outside, but it was still beautiful with its intricate details.
JD’s Tip: Go early to avoid large tour groups if you plan to go inside.
4. Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) 🌟 Did This
I didn’t go inside, but the outside view was stunning — especially from across the river.
JD’s Tip: Take the ferry for a great photo angle.
5. Chao Phraya River & Bridges 🌟 Did This
I enjoyed the views of the river and bridges while exploring the city — a peaceful break from the traffic.
JD’s Tip: The public ferry is a cheap way to see the city from the water.
6. Floating Markets ⏳ Missed This
Colourful markets where vendors sell food and goods from boats.
JD’s Tip: Some are outside the city — plan for a half-day trip.
7. Chinatown (Yaowarat Road) ⏳ Missed This
Famous for its street food, neon signs, and bustling atmosphere.
JD’s Tip: Go hungry and try the seafood stalls.
8. Chatuchak Weekend Market ⏳ Missed This
One of the largest markets in the world, selling everything from clothes to pets.
JD’s Tip: Wear comfortable shoes — it’s huge.
9. Jim Thompson House ⏳ Missed This
A traditional Thai-style house turned museum.
JD’s Tip: Good for history and architecture lovers.
10. Rooftop Views 🌟 Did This
Bangkok is famous for its rooftop bars with panoramic views — I didn’t go to an official one, but I did climb to my hotel rooftop with friends (not exactly allowed) and enjoyed the view with our own drinks. Slightly dangerous, but definitely memorable.
JD’s Tip: For a safer option, try one of the city’s many official rooftop bars — go for sunset to see the city transform at night.
