Top 10 Places to Visit in Thailand

Thailand isn’t just beaches and backpacker parties — I leaned into the local side. From partying in Khon Kaen with students to visiting elephants in Surin and island-hopping in Koh Chang, my journey showed me a Thailand many tourists never see.

👉 Side note: I skipped the famous Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan. For me, it felt too touristy and not very connected to Thai culture. Instead, I partied with locals in Khon Kaen and Koh Chang — a totally different (and way more authentic) experience.

1. Bangkok 🏙️ 🌟 Did This

The capital is chaotic, vibrant, and unforgettable. Golden temples, street food stalls, night markets, and rooftop bars — Bangkok has it all. I loved wandering through the Grand Palace, eating pad thai on the street, and exploring the famous Khao San Road.
💡 JD’s Tip: Skip the tuk-tuk scams. Always agree on a price first — sometimes taxis are cheaper.

2. Chiang Mai ⛰️ 🌟 Did This

A slower-paced northern hub, famous for temples, mountain views, and night markets. I loved exploring the Old City and seeing a different side of Thai life here.
💡 JD’s Tip: Cooking classes are popular — a fun way to learn and eat at the same time.

3. Phuket 🏝️ 🌟 Did This

Touristy, yes — but it’s Thailand’s largest island and one of its busiest. Beaches, nightlife, and island-hopping tours — Phuket has something for everyone. I based myself here to explore the Phi Phi Islands and loved the buzzing Patong Beach area.
💡 JD’s Tip: Don’t miss a day trip to Phang Nga Bay with its limestone cliffs and emerald waters.

4. Pattaya 🎉 🌟 Did This

Thailand’s legendary nightlife city, known as “Little Bangkok.” I went for the party scene and it truly lived up to its name — neon lights, live music, and clubs that never seem to close. Beyond the nightlife, Pattaya also has beaches and island tours if you want a breather.

💡 JD’s Tip: Pace yourself! Pattaya is intense, so plan at least one day to just relax after the party nights.

5. Koh Chang 🐘 🌟 Did This

A big island near Trat with more Thai than foreign tourists. I partied, visited elephants, snorkeled, and loved the laid-back beaches.
💡 JD’s Tip: Each beach has its own vibe — check out more than one.

6. Surin 🐘 🌟 Did This

Known for its elephants and traditional silk weaving. I visited the town (though not the elephant festival) and loved how authentic it felt compared to tourist-heavy areas.
💡 JD’s Tip: If you’re in town during November, the Elephant Round-Up is one of Thailand’s most unique cultural events.

7. Khon Kaen 🎶 🌟 Did This

A true university city in Isaan. I partied here with locals — it’s lively, affordable, and has a totally different energy than Bangkok.
💡 JD’s Tip: Great nightlife if you want to escape the tourist bubble.

8. Koh Samui 🌴 ❌ Missed This

One of Thailand’s most famous islands — palm-lined beaches, waterfalls, and luxury resorts. I skipped it this time, but it’s a classic.
💡 JD’s Tip: Rent a scooter to explore beyond the tourist beaches and find hidden gems.

9. Rayong 🏖️ 🌟 Did This

A coastal province east of Pattaya, popular with Thai families. I loved how local it felt compared to the big-name beaches.
💡 JD’s Tip: A great spot if you want seafood by the sea without the chaos of Pattaya or Phuket.

10. Krabi ⛰️ ❌ Missed This

Krabi is pure paradise — dramatic cliffs, hidden lagoons, and stunning beaches. It’s great for its climbing vibe and Ao Nang for boat trips to nearby islands.
💡 JD’s Tip: Railay can only be reached by boat — plan ahead, especially if carrying luggage.
