Top 10 Unique Things to Do in Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo is a dazzling mix of neon lights, centuries-old temples, quirky cafés, and world-class theme parks. I visited twice — first for a short three-day trip where I explored the city’s culture and nightlife, and again in 2024 for an epic Disney double-header, flower gardens, and more sightseeing. Here’s my personal Top 10 based on both visits.

A breathtaking bird’s-eye view of Tokyo’s endless cityscape.

1. Shibuya Crossing & Hachikō Statue 🌟 Did This (Sort Of)

I’m pretty sure I crossed here when using Shibuya Station, but I didn’t realize at the time it was the famous crossing. I also may have walked past Hachikō without noticing!
JD’s Tip: The crossing is right outside Shibuya Station’s Hachikō Exit — next time, I’ll slow down and take it all in.

2. Tokyo Disneyland & DisneySea 🌟 Did This

As a huge Disney fan, these were a dream come true. Disneyland feels classic, while DisneySea is unique to Japan and one of the most beautifully themed parks I’ve ever seen.
JD’s Tip: Plan at least a full day for each park, and check crowd calendars — weekdays are less hectic than weekends.

3. Tokyo Skytree 🌟 Did This

Soaring views over the city and Mount Fuji on a clear day.
JD’s Tip: Go just before sunset so you can see Tokyo in daylight and lit up at night.

4. Asakusa & Sensō-ji Temple 🌟 Did This

A bustling temple area with stalls selling souvenirs and charms. I picked up trinkets for my family here.
JD’s Tip: It’s worth visiting in the morning before it gets crowded.

5. Samurai Museum 🌟 Did This

A fascinating look at samurai armour, weapons, and history.
JD’s Tip: Take the guided tour for cool stories and photo ops in samurai gear.

6. Harajuku’s Takeshita Street 🌟 Did This

Colourful fashion, crepes, and quirky shops.
JD’s Tip: Arrive early to avoid the weekend crush.

Harajuku’s iconic entryway — a burst of colour leading to Tokyo’s quirkiest street.

7. Ueno Park 🌟 Did This

Famous for cherry blossoms — I missed them by just one week! I came instead for the peony garden, which was still stunning and peaceful.
JD’s Tip: Check seasonal flower schedules so you catch blooms at their best.

A calm escape in the city, filled with seasonal blooms and ponds.

8. Shinjuku 🌟 Did This

A buzzing district full of shops, nightlife, and the famous Kabukichō area. I explored the streets, soaked in the neon atmosphere, and found plenty of great food spots.
JD’s Tip: Visit after dark to see Shinjuku at its most vibrant.

A neon-lit hub of nightlife, entertainment, and endless ramen shops.

9. Robot Restaurant 🌟 Did This

A wild mix of robots, lasers, and live performers — truly Tokyo in its most over-the-top form.
JD’s Tip: It’s more of a show than a meal, so eat beforehand.

Watched an outrageous show of robots, lasers, and dragons.

10. Imperial Palace Ruins 🌟 Did This

The remains of Edo Castle — interesting historically, but honestly not as exciting as other spots in Tokyo.
JD’s Tip: Pair it with a stroll through the surrounding gardens.

Wandered through the quiet Imperial Palace Ruins and gardens.
