Top 10 Things to Do in Las Peñitas, Nicaragua
Las Peñitas is where León slows down. Just 20 minutes from the city, this laid-back beach town is all about sunsets, surf, and doing absolutely nothing — in the best way possible. I spent 2 nights here, using it as a place to slow down, reset, and take a break from constant moving.
This list includes what I did while I was there, along with a few things I’d check out next time — because even in a slow beach town, there’s always more to explore.
1. Watch the Sunset Every Night ⭐ Did This
Las Peñitas sunsets are unreal — big, dramatic, and different every single night. The sky lights up in oranges, pinks, and deep purples while the waves roll in. It becomes a daily ritual here, whether you’re on the beach or at a bar with a drink in hand.
💡 JD’s Tip: Grab a beer, sit in the sand, and don’t rush it — this is the main event.

2. Go Surfing ❌ Missed This
This is one of Nicaragua’s best beginner surf spots, with consistent waves and a relaxed vibe. You’ll see surf schools right on the beach offering cheap lessons and board rentals. Even just watching people out in the water gives you a feel for the surf culture here.
💡 JD’s Tip: Go early in the morning for calmer winds and better waves.
3. Take a Day Trip to León ⭐ Did This
Las Peñitas is quiet — so León is the perfect contrast when you want energy, food, and things to do. You can explore colonial streets, grab amazing local food, or even go volcano boarding. It’s an easy and cheap trip by shuttle or taxi.
💡 JD’s Tip: Stay for sunset in León one day — then come back to beach life.

4. Explore Juan Venado Island Nature Reserve ❌ Missed This
This mangrove reserve is full of wildlife — crocodiles, birds, turtles, and more. Most people explore it by boat with a local guide, drifting through narrow waterways surrounded by jungle. It’s one of the more unique experiences near Las Peñitas.
💡 JD’s Tip: Go early or near sunset for the best chance to see animals.
5. Beach Walks (Miles of Empty Coastline) ⭐ Did This
One of the best parts of Las Peñitas is how empty it feels. You can walk for miles along the beach and barely see anyone, especially outside peak hours. It’s the kind of place where time disappears.
💡 JD’s Tip: I walked a lot here — bring water, the sun is no joke.
Miles of open beach in Las Peñitas — perfect for long, slow walks.
6. Beach Bars & Chill Nights ⭐ Did This
There’s not much nightlife — but that’s the point. Evenings are spent at small beach bars, drinking, listening to music, and watching the waves. It’s social without being chaotic.
💡 JD’s Tip: Don’t expect a party scene — expect a vibe.

7. Enjoy a Beach Bonfire ⭐ Did This
One of my favorite memories here — bonfires right on the beach at night. People gather, share drinks, and just hang out under the stars with the sound of the ocean in the background. It’s simple, but it’s one of those moments that sticks with you.
💡 JD’s Tip: If you see one starting, don’t be shy — this is an easy place to meet people.
Nights in Las Peñitas were simple — just a fire, the ocean, and good company.
8. Visit Poneloya Beach ❌ Missed This
Just next door, Poneloya is slightly more developed but still relaxed. It has a few more restaurants and a different beach feel compared to Las Peñitas. It’s an easy walk or short ride between the two.
💡 JD’s Tip: Good option if you want a change of scenery for the day.
9. Eat Beachside (Even If It’s Not Seafood) ⭐ Did This
Seafood is everywhere here — but if you’re like me and don’t eat it, don’t worry. I stuck to chicken while everyone else around me had fresh fish and shrimp. The experience is still the same: simple meals, ocean views, and a laid-back vibe.
💡 JD’s Tip: Go where it’s busy — that’s always a good sign.
Everyone else ordered seafood… I stuck with chicken — no regrets.
10. Do Absolutely Nothing ⭐ Did This
This sounds like a joke, but it’s honestly one of the best things to do here. Las Peñitas isn’t about checking boxes — it’s about slowing down. Swim, nap, read, repeat.
💡 JD’s Tip: If you feel like you’re “not doing enough,” you’re doing it right.

Final Thoughts
Las Peñitas isn’t a place packed with attractions — and that’s exactly why it’s special. It’s where you go to breathe, reset, and just exist for a while. Between the sunsets, empty beaches, and slow pace of life, it’s one of those places that sneaks up on you.
I didn’t plan to love it as much as I did… but I stayed longer than expected — and I’d go back in a heartbeat.
