Introduction
Monteverde is unlike anywhere else in Costa Rica. Perched high in the mountains, this misty cloud forest is famous for its incredible biodiversity, hanging bridges, wildlife, and cool mountain air. I spent a few days exploring the area and quickly discovered that Monteverde isn't just about one famous forest—it's an adventure destination packed with nature, wildlife, and unique experiences. Whether you're chasing adrenaline or hoping to spot rare animals, Monteverde offers a side of Costa Rica that's completely different from the country's beaches and volcanoes.
1. Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve 🌟 Did This
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is the area's most famous attraction, and for good reason. Walking through the mist-covered trails feels like stepping into another world, with towering trees draped in moss, unique plants around every corner, and birds calling from the canopy above. The cool mountain air makes hiking enjoyable, and every bend in the trail feels like it could reveal another incredible animal. It's one of the best places in Costa Rica to truly appreciate just how diverse the country's wildlife is.
💡 JD's Tip: Arrive early to beat both the crowds and the afternoon rain. Wildlife is often much more active during the morning hours.

2. Frog Pond (Ranario) 🌟 Did This
One of my favourite experiences in Monteverde was visiting the Frog Pond at night. Seeing the famous red-eyed tree frog had been on my bucket list for years, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. The guided walk also introduced me to dozens of other colourful frogs and reptiles that I never would have spotted on my own. It ended up being one of the highlights of my entire Costa Rica trip.
💡 JD's Tip: Keep your ticket! If you visit during the day, you can usually return for the night tour for free. That's exactly what I did, and seeing the frogs after dark was a completely different experience.

3. Selvatura Hanging Bridges ❌ Missed This
Walking above the forest canopy is one of Monteverde's signature experiences. The series of suspension bridges offers spectacular views across the cloud forest while giving visitors a chance to spot wildlife from a completely different perspective. It's a peaceful walk that lets you appreciate just how massive the trees really are. If you're not interested in ziplining, this is one of the best ways to experience the forest from above.
💡 JD's Tip: Bring binoculars. Many animals stay high in the trees and are much easier to spot with a little magnification.
4. Ziplining Through the Cloud Forest ❌ Missed This
Monteverde is considered one of the best places in Costa Rica for ziplining. Flying through the mist between giant trees is an unforgettable adrenaline rush, and several courses include Superman-style ziplines that let you soar face-first over the forest canopy. Even if you've ziplined before, Monteverde offers one of the most scenic settings in the country.

5. Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve ❌ Missed This
Often overshadowed by the Monteverde Reserve, Santa Elena Cloud Forest offers a quieter and less crowded experience. The trails are just as beautiful, and many visitors actually prefer the peaceful atmosphere. On clear days, you'll even find viewpoints stretching across the surrounding mountains. It's a fantastic alternative if you're looking to escape the busiest trails.
💡 JD's Tip: Visit if you prefer fewer crowds while still experiencing an incredible cloud forest.
6. Curi-Cancha Reserve ❌ Missed This
Birdwatchers from around the world visit Curi-Cancha in hopes of spotting the magnificent resplendent quetzal. The reserve combines open fields with dense forest, making wildlife easier to see than in thicker cloud forests. Along with birds, you may also spot monkeys, coatis, and countless other species. It's one of Monteverde's hidden gems.
💡 JD's Tip: Hiring a guide greatly increases your chances of spotting wildlife you would otherwise walk right past.
7. Monteverde Orchid Garden ❌ Missed This
Home to hundreds of orchid species, this small botanical garden showcases some of the tiniest flowers you'll ever see. Many orchids bloom throughout the year, meaning every visit offers something a little different. The knowledgeable guides also explain why these delicate flowers play such an important role in Costa Rica's ecosystems.
💡 JD's Tip: Even if you're not normally interested in flowers, the guided tour makes this surprisingly fascinating.
8. El Tigre Waterfalls ❌ Missed This
If you're looking for a more challenging hike, El Tigre Waterfalls delivers. The trail passes several beautiful waterfalls, suspension bridges, rivers, and scenic viewpoints before climbing back to the top. It's one of the more adventurous hikes around Monteverde and rewards visitors with some stunning scenery along the way.

Dining at the Tree House Restaurant is an experience as much as a meal. Built around a massive living fig tree, the restaurant blends perfectly into the surrounding forest and has become one of Monteverde's most iconic landmarks. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it a great place to relax after a day of exploring. It's one of those restaurants you'll remember long after the meal is over.
💡 JD's Tip: Try to get a table overlooking the giant tree, especially in the evening when the lights come on—it feels even more magical.
10. Browse the Souvenir Shops in Santa Elena 🌟 Did This
Monteverde's small town centre is full of locally owned souvenir shops selling handmade crafts, Costa Rican coffee, chocolate, artwork, and plenty of colourful keepsakes. I spent quite a while wandering through the stores and found it much more relaxed than shopping in some of Costa Rica's larger tourist towns. It's a great way to support local businesses while picking up something to remember your trip.
💡 JD's Tip: Don't rush. Some of the best little shops are tucked just off the main street, and prices are often better than at larger souvenir stores elsewhere in Costa Rica.
Final Thoughts
Monteverde quickly became one of my favourite places in Costa Rica. Between the cool mountain climate, misty cloud forests, incredible wildlife, and relaxed little town, it felt completely different from the country's beaches and volcanoes. Finally seeing a red-eyed tree frog in person was a genuine bucket-list moment, and wandering around Santa Elena after a day of hiking was the perfect way to unwind.
There were plenty of other activities I wanted to do—especially the hanging bridges, ziplining, and some of the nearby reserves—but like most trips, I had to balance both my budget and my time. Sometimes that's just part of travelling, and it gives you the perfect excuse to come back.
Monteverde is one of those places that reminds you to slow down, look up into the trees, and appreciate just how incredible nature can be.
