Top 10 Places to Visit in Guatemala

Guatemala completely stole my heart with its colourful markets, volcano hikes, lush jungles, and lakeside villages. Every city has its own personality — from the colonial charm of Antigua to the island vibes of Flores. Here’s my personal list of the Top 10 Places to Visit in Guatemala, with notes on what I actually did (and what I missed!).

1. Antigua, Guatemala 🌟 Did This

A UNESCO World Heritage city surrounded by volcanoes, cobblestone streets, and colonial ruins. I loved wandering the plazas, seeing old churches, and soaking in views of Volcán Agua.
💡 JD’s Tip: Climb up to Cerro de la Cruz for one of the best views over Antigua.

Antigua’s secret? Every rooftop comes with a volcano and a drink worth lingering over.

2. Lake Atitlán Villages 🌟 Did This

Each lakeside town feels unique — San Pedro for nightlife, San Marcos for yoga, Panajachel as the transport hub. I hopped between villages by boat, and each one felt like its own little world along the lake.
💡 JD’s Tip: Take the local boats instead of tours — it’s cheaper and more fun.

Lake Atitlán — a postcard-perfect view that looks too beautiful to be real.

3. Flores 🌟 Did This

A colorful island town on Lake Petén Itzá, and the base for visiting Tikal. I enjoyed the pastel streets, lakeside cafes, and watching the sunset glow over the water.
💡 JD’s Tip: Explore on foot in the evening when the lakefront comes alive.

A quick photo stop at the iconic ‘Yo ❤️ Petén’ sign before wandering along the lakefront.

4. Semuc Champey (Lanquin) 🌟 Did This

On the backpacker trail for its turquoise pools, caves, and jungle setting. I went here and loved exploring the pools and nearby gorge. It’s a bit remote, but absolutely worth it.
💡 JD’s Tip: The journey is long and bumpy, so plan at least two nights to make it worthwhile.

Trust me: this view is 1000× better in real life.

5. Quetzaltenango (Xela)Missed This

A highland city known for Spanish schools, mountain views, and a more local feel than Antigua.
💡 JD’s Tip: Use Xela as a hub for hikes and hot springs if you have extra time.

6. Rio Dulce 🌟 Did This

A riverside town where I based myself for exploring the gorge, hot waterfalls, and kayaking. I also took the boat trip down the river toward Livingston — easily one of the most scenic rides in Guatemala.
💡 JD’s Tip: Stay at one of the jungle lodges along the river for a peaceful escape.

Views that make you forget your arms are tired.

7. Livingston 🌟 Did This

Only reachable by boat, this Afro-Caribbean town feels like another country within Guatemala. Reggae beats, Garifuna culture, and seafood stews gave it a unique vibe.
💡 JD’s Tip: Spend a night instead of doing just a day trip, so you can enjoy the evening atmosphere.

A dip in Livingston’s jungle pools? Always yes.

8. Cobán 🌟 Did This (Sort Of)

I only switched buses here, but it’s the main hub for reaching Semuc Champey and exploring nearby waterfalls, caves, and coffee farms.
💡 JD’s Tip: If you stay, use it as a base for eco-tours and nature trips.

9. HuehuetenangoMissed This

A traditional highland city often overlooked by tourists, but a good base for mountain treks and cultural experiences.
💡 JD’s Tip: Head here if you want to explore Todos Santos or the Cuchumatanes mountains.

10. ZacapaMissed This

A lesser-visited town in eastern Guatemala with a hot, dry climate. Known for its rum production and as a jumping-off point for exploring offbeat parts of the country.
💡 JD’s Tip: Worth a stop if you’re heading toward Honduras or El Salvador.

Final Thoughts

Guatemala is one of those countries that surprises you over and over again. From volcano hikes and jungle rivers to island sunsets and colorful markets, every region feels completely different — yet all share the same warmth and hospitality. It’s easy to travel, affordable, and packed with adventure. Out of all the countries I’ve visited in Central America, Guatemala stands out as one of the most authentic and unforgettable. I’d go back in a heartbeat.

When the Caribbean adventure starts with a surprise cold front… but you’re still vibing.
