Top 10 Places to Visit in Belize

Belize may be small, but it’s bursting with adventure — turquoise waters, ancient ruins, jungles, and some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. I spent several months volunteering with manatees and exploring both the coast and the interior. Whether you’re here for reefs or ruins, Belize has something for everyone.

First stop: Belize City! The perfect photo op before heading off to explore jungles, reefs, and cayes.

1. San Pedro (Ambergris Caye) 🌟 Did This

Belize’s liveliest island is full of beach bars, bright buildings, and friendly locals cruising around on golf carts. It’s the perfect mix of Caribbean rhythm and laid-back energy.

💡 JD’s Tip: Rent a golf cart and head to Secret Beach for sunset — it’s worth the bumpy ride!

Just another casual day in Belize… floating in front of a seaside restaurant between bites

2. Caye Caulker ❌ Missed This

Just south of San Pedro, this tiny island runs on the motto “Go Slow.” Backpackers love its colorful streets, chill beach bars, and snorkeling spots. It’s smaller, cheaper, and more relaxed than Ambergris.

💡 JD’s Tip: The Split is the best spot to swim, grab a drink, and watch the sun go down.

First glimpse of Caye Caulker from the ferry — palm trees, pastel houses, and pure island vibes.

3. The Great Blue Hole ❌ Missed This

One of the most famous dive sites in the world — a deep, circular sinkhole surrounded by vibrant reef. Whether you dive it or take a scenic flight above, it’s an unforgettable sight.

💡 JD’s Tip: The flight from San Pedro offers unbeatable aerial views if you can’t dive.

4. San Ignacio 🌟 Did This

This jungle town near the Guatemalan border is Belize’s adventure hub. Surrounded by caves, waterfalls, and ancient ruins, it’s the perfect base for inland exploration.

💡 JD’s Tip: Don’t miss the nearby Xunantunich ruins — easy to reach and rich in history.

Exploring the ruins outside San Ignacio — where every climb rewards you with a view worth the sweat.

5. ATM Cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal) ❌ Missed This

An adventure like no other — swimming, climbing, and wading through a sacred Mayan cave filled with pottery and crystalized skeletons. It’s equal parts eerie and incredible.

💡 JD’s Tip: Only licensed guides are allowed — book early, as spots are limited.

6. Hopkins ❌ Missed This

A small coastal Garifuna village where drumming, dance, and local culture fill the air. It’s slower and more authentic than the islands but just as beautiful.

💡 JD’s Tip: Join a drumming class — it’s the best way to connect with the culture.

7. Placencia ❌ Missed This

A sandy peninsula lined with colorful houses, calm beaches, and cozy cafés. Perfect for kayaking, snorkeling, or relaxing after jungle adventures.

💡 JD’s Tip: Visit during Lobsterfest (June/July) — a celebration of food, music, and beach fun.

8. Belize Barrier Reef ❌ Missed This

The second-largest reef system in the world stretches along the coast, teeming with coral gardens, turtles, and rays.

💡 JD’s Tip: Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley are the most popular snorkeling spots.

9. Lamanai Ruins ❌ Missed This

Set deep in the jungle and reached by a scenic riverboat ride, these ancient Mayan ruins are both peaceful and powerful.

💡 JD’s Tip: Bring bug spray and start early — mornings are cooler and quieter.

10. Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary ❌ Missed This

A birdwatcher’s paradise where hundreds of species gather during the dry season.

💡 JD’s Tip: Visit between February and May for the best wildlife viewing.

Final Thoughts

Belize may be small, but it’s full of life. From reef to rainforest, every corner feels different — and even though I didn’t see it all, what I did experience was unforgettable. It’s a place that rewards slow travel, curiosity, and connection.
Don’t be surprised if you hear howler monkeys calling from the jungle or spot iguanas sunbathing on rooftops — little reminders that in Belize, nature is always close by.

From manatees to iguanas, Belize’s wildlife always finds a way to steal the spotlight.
